'Wings' is a song for soprano, guitar, harp and flute, with an alternative piano accompaniment. (There is also an arrangement for viola.) The refrain speaks of a spirit choked and weighed down. The first verse reflects on the easy freedom of our childhood dreams, while the second verse, to the same melody but in a more sombre setting, laments the reality of a choking relationship. At the end the two themes merge into one plaintive whole, as the flute recalls the heart-cry of the verse above a final despairing refrain.
