There have been HARROP families in the West Riding for hundreds of years, many in a small area to the west of Doncaster and north of Rotherham.  The parishes of High Melton, Barnburgh (Barnborough), Mexborough, Wath Upon Dearne, Adwick and Bolton upon Dearne etc. have many entries in their registers under HARRAP, HARREP, HARRIP, HARROP and HARRUP, not to mention the variations with just one R or two Ps or a concluding E.

The outline here shows just one branch of the family, living in Barnburgh for generation after generation. As well as being the family of Elizabeth HARROP who married Thomas HARRISON and whose daughter Ann married William Alexander MILAN in 1852 it seems likely also to be linked with the Frederick Lee HARROP who was born in Swinton in 1844 and whose life has been so vividly portrayed in Ken WYATT's 2007 book "Civic Lives - The Story of a Town Clerk and his family) .
